Where to live if you want to be 100

Japan

Do you want to live to 100? You might want to think about moving to the island of Okinawa in Japan, the highlands of Sardinia, Loma Linda in California or France.

Japan

People who live in Japan remain in good health longer than anybody else in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. The average healthy life expectancy is 74.5 years in Japan, compared to an average of 71.7 years in the UK.

The Japanese eat healthily and take more exercise than many other developed nations. Most meals are based around rice, fish and sea vegetables. In fact, the Japanese eat twice as much fish as they do meat, which is the opposite of most Western countries. Eating fish, particularly oily ones, can reduce the risk of various cancers, heart disease and osteoporosis. Seaweed is another superfood - high in rich antioxidants and minerals as is green tea, which has long been known for its health benefits.

The longest living people on earth can be found in Okinawa, Japan. Less than one percent of Okinawan people who live to be 100 are overweight. Okinawans have a saying, 'Hara hachi bu', which they repeat before each meal. It means 'I must stop eating when I am 80 per cent full'.
